House committee’s decision shows impeach case vs. Sereno is strong — complainant
The House justice committee's 25-2 vote finding sufficient grounds to allow his impeachment complaint against Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno to proceed shows that his case is strong, lawyer Lorenzo "Larry" Gadon said.
"This development has demonstrated the fact that the case is strong and that the arguments of the Sereno camp are weak," Gadon said in a statement.
"I am very positive that [the] impeachment complaint will be transmitted to the Senate soon with overwhelming votes by the members of the House in a plenary voting," he added.
Gadon reiterated his call for Sereno to resign before the trial begins to save her dignity and avoid humiliation and embarrassment.
"If Chief Justice Sereno will not resign, I challenge her to issue a bank waiver on secrecy of deposits. This is an issue which they refuse and fail to address," he said.
Sereno's camp, however, said that despite this development, their fight continues.
"[W]e will proceed and then we will continue to make our points," lawyer Anacleto Lacanilao III, part of Sereno's defense team, told reporters in an ambush interview on Thursday.
Lawyer Josa Deinla, spokesperson for Sereno, has also maintained that the Chief Justice will not step down from her post.
"The Chief Justice will not resign because she has done nothing unlawful, illegal and impeachable," Deinla said in an ambush interview on Monday following President Rodrigo Duterte's dare for Sereno to resign with him.
"Ang gusto niya lang mangyari ay makapagpatuloy siya sa paggampan sa kanyang mga tungkulin bilang punong mahistrado ng Korte Suprema," she added. — BM, GMA News
